The best moments in parenting often arrive when I do nothing. I don’t talk. I don’t assist. I don’t offer help. I simply sit back, relax, and let time and space envelope us. When I do this, the magic happens. My son retreats into his fantastical toddler world, his focus narrows, and he becomes engrossed in play—the true…Continue

The funny part is that I think it has rained twice in the past year. Both times on her birthday. We stayed in high…Continue
Not long ago, we attended my niece's second birthday party. She had lots of little friends in attendance, several kiddie pools full of water and toys,…Continue
As part of celebrating Easter this year we asked the kids over dinner, what does it look like to love others? Love our family. Love our friends. Love each other. Love teachers. Love classmates. Love our school. Love church friends. Love our coaches. Love our nurses, doctors & dentists. Love strangers. Love happy people. Love grumpy people. Could we think of a dozen ways to love others? …Continue

It was a New York crowd, intimidating to this West Virginia girl. I was at the wedding with a date who had been part of this crowd once himself, a crowd of former prep students and elite college grads. There were beautiful girls in mini dresses and high…Continue

Parents often wonder what the appropriate age is to get a kid a cell phone. Some kids beg for one, claiming all their friends at school have them. Some parents feel it’s a safety thing – kids can get hold of them when…Continue
