Don't Sweat The Small Stuff

We moan, we groan, we complain and we rant... "There aren't enough hours in the day," "I'm so stressed out," "Which school is the best school?" "Why do I have to drive this far?" Daily life is most often than not, a GRIND. We try to make a living, we try to appease everyone, we try to make ourselves happy and often at the end of the day, we are just… Continue

Hockey - Sport or Insanity? By: Julie Cole

Hockey is a great North American tradition and our family heads off to the arena on a regular basis to watch our kids try to get a puck in a net. Daddy-o even builds an ice rink in the backyard every winter so they can play among themselves and with neighbourhood kids. My 10-year-old son was keen to play through summer and a few weeks ago his team was in the championship game. It was a summer house league 3-on-3 team so hardly a highly competitive… Continue

Simple Gifts

My avatar for this group, is a picture of me sitting at the computer, covered in all the toys that my daughter has brought me. In the time it took to read some holiday emails, my daughter had covered my lap with small plastic toys, forced a balloon in my hand and put a Styrofoam Indiana Jones hat on my head. My wife was impressed with my determination to finish reading my email and snapped a picture of me for posterity.

Sunday, my wife and I were… Continue

Saying "No" to Others / Avoiding being a People Pleaser

As parents, we find ourselves running from activity to activity with our children, always wanting to make sure we provide them with everything their little hearts desire. It's difficult to say "no" to our kids, our spouses, our families, our friends because isn't it human nature to want to be everything to everybody? We want the people in our life to be happy and perhaps, most importantly, happy with us! We want to be the… Continue

In a world like ours, the idea of sitting in silence is almost antiquated. We are constantly "plugged in." We listen to music, have the TV on in the background, chat on the phone, and BBM someone else on our blackberry all at the same time. This world of chaos has for many, created anxiety over just sitting and being quiet with zero distractions. This of… Continue

Travels with CHICKS. Meeno, Ilse, Bindi & Mette do Clifton's Cafeteria

The lost art of the tray and melamine plates. The chrome slider rails as the jello does it's burlesque beside chops and stewed spinach. Of all the grand, Burtonesque adventures we've endeavored to drag our CHICKS on, the top of a Balinese volcano for geo-thermally poached eggs, the three hour tajines with drum and bell players in the Atlas mountains of Morocco, the jungle fruit breakfasts in the homey casa particulares of the Colonial Cuban south coast and the sweet meats sandwiches you find… Continue

Are You A Fall Person??

I honestly think that people for some unknown reason respond chemically to certain seasons. Even though I love all of the seasons for their own unique qualities, there is something about the Fall that on a cellular level changes my entire outlook on life. It puts me in a perpetual good mood and makes me feel very positive about everything. I have friends that react… Continue

Burn Notice: Romance and Espionage

Burn Notice is an American TV series starring Jeffrey Donovan and Gabrielle Anwar. Espionage activity and love affairs is a really perfect combination for this genre. You are sure to like Michael and Fiona.

Making Friends...

Our children are now in new classes and have to face the challenges that come with that. Unchartered territories, new lessons, new teachers and the task of making new friends! We stand idly off to the side and watch how this happens. Often times, one child will invite your child to join a game or simply approach your child because they want to play… Continue

The television, as most parents have come to know, can provide some much needed quiet time in the household and even some very educational programming for our children, but when is it too much television? Sure we all know it's easy to plop the kids down in front of a TV because after all, it keeps them quiet for a little while and gives us a chance to get some things done without screaming in the background. Even if they watch… Continue
